Into strange lands

As another adventure starts alongside the heroic Drow Drizzt Do’Urden, with the thirty third book of this amazing saga, Hero, the last book of the Homecoming trilogy, I feel the urge to find some graphic novels to complement the already amazing journey.

Luckily, I found four volumes on my digital library of the classic series of the Forgotten Realms, penned by the legendary Jeff Grub.

Let’s see how the weekend plays out, while a trek alongside this unlikely heroes thru the treacherous lands of the Forgotten Realms, maybe there’s some hoard of gold to be found, or better yet, some pages for my bounty.

Off to read.

Azriel’s Infinite Bookshelf: A reading conundrum

I finished the amazing Halloween by legendary writer Ray Bradbury, and may I say that it was the perfect book for this time of year.

My next adventure is the third book of the Companions Codex, Drizzt and the Companions of the Hall face the biggest war ever to hit Faerûn.

My next step in my perpetual list presents me with a conundrum.

Do I finish my trek thru Genabackis?

This will take thru 4 more books, being the next volume Reaper’s Gale, pictured above.

Or do I head for the stars and journey to find lost civilizations in the Saga of the Seven Suns ?

This journey will take me thru 7 books, starting with Hidden Empire.

So many great books, so little time.

What should I do ?

For now, I am off to read.

Numbers: 15 days

I have exactly two weeks to go on my year of reading.

My main focus will be to surpass my best year of reading, the very first one with a total of 47,706 pages.

I have 3,626 pages in front of me, that means that I should read at least 241 pages today.

To aid me in this fine Sunday I will pull out the big guns, Batman and Drizzt Do’Urden.

Wish me luck.

(Y-12) Third day of the Bookly #stayathomereadathon and the revisiting of some old friends

Hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy.

I am participating on the Bookly latest readathon, a pretty good way to pass this hard times, a bit of light in all of this darkness.

The main goal is to read 25 hours between April 13 to April 19.

So far I have read

Monday 2 hours and 42 minutes

Tuesday 1 hour and 27 minutes

And today, so far, I have read 1 hour and 24 minutes.

That gives me a total of 5 hours and 33 minutes.

Not bad.

Hopefully, I’ll finish the day over 7 hours.

Now for the important part, what I am reading.

I am about to finish The Night of the Hunter, the 25th book of the Legend of Drizzt saga, it’s always a pleasure be back at Faerûn.

I will start the next volume, Rise of the King, this alongside the novelization of the Academy award winning movie The Shape of Water, directed by the amazing Guillermo del Toro.

In the comic book/graphic novel front, I’ll be revisiting some classic DC comics storylines, Zero Hour and Flashpoint.

This as a prelude to read to some events that I haven’t got around to see, The Button and Doomsday Clock.

I have a lot of great material ahead, and a great challenge to tackle.

For now, I am off to read.

Keep safe and healthy.

(Y-12) Keep on reading

Hope everyone is safe and healthy.

We still have 21 days left of the mandatory quarantine, as off today the last day would be April 30, the only thing that we can do is go out to purchase essentials things like groceries and medicine, a strict curfew has yet to be enforced.

But as the thing is shaping up here in Mexico, we are still in for the long haul.

In this still really bleary situation the only thing left to do, for us who have the immense privilege, is to stay home.

With that in mind, here is how my reading is progressing.

On the book front, there are still 36 books left on this year’s reading list.

I have finished the amazing Malebolge, written by Ruy Feben, and published by what I considered to be one of the best Mexican independent publishing houses.

The book expands over 15 short tales, that for me is like opening doors in a poorly lighted corridor in some madhouse, to find some hellish scene behind each and everyone, it is beautifully executed, and a refreshing read, go and learn Spanish, and purchase it, you won’t regret it.

The next book on my list, and one I have already started reading it, is the next chapter of the now mythical adventure of the rogue Drow Drizzt Do’Urden.

The Night of the Hunter is the first book on the Trilogy Companion Codex and book number 28 on The Legend of Drizzt saga, and it finds the Companions of the Hall walking ancient familiars paths, while in an ancient Dwarven city trouble is brewing in the worst possible way.

20200409_0911424116518005524211477.jpg

On the graphic novel/comic book front, I finished two amazing stories.

First off, and much to my surprise, was a crossover between the famous Spider-Man villain Venom and the Children of Atom, the X-men.

screenshot_20200408-0948061226955976.jpg

In Poison X, written by Cullen Bunn, the X-men team up with Eddie Brock to face and interstellar threat, a band of symbiote wearing mercenaries ready to take over the whole universe.

The other graphic novel that I finished, while catching some much-needed sunshine, was the third volume of World of Warcraft, this amazing story-arc was written by the legendary author Walter Simonson.

20200408_1410086569039988254227932.jpg

The stakes get even higher, and much of the creatures of Azeroth must band together to make front to the impending wave of the undead Lich ready to swallow everything in their path.

To continue with my reading, I finished the Legenderry Red Sonja miniseries, issues 4 and 5, and I’ll continue with the main series, written by Bill Willingham, and another miniseries of Red Sonja, written again by Marc Andreyko.

As you can see, I have been keeping busy.

Now I would like to talk about some of my numbers.

In my quest to reach 30,000 for this of reading I still have 5,796 net pages left, and I have a registered total of 24,240 pages for this twelve year of reading.

I am also 32 days ahead of schedule for this year of reading.

On the bigger picture, my projected date for reaching the 500,000-page mark is August 30, 2027, that is 4 days better than the last time.

My projected date to reach my ultimate goal, 1,000,000 pages is now July 20, 2046.

That means that I am 5,528 days behind schedule and by the time I reach this coveted number I would be 65 years, 1 month, and 15 days old.

There is still a lot of work to do.

But with each passing day, I gain a bit of ground.

For now, I am off to read.

Stay Safe.

Stay Healthy.

(Y-12) The Companions

I just finished reading the second book of this year of reading, The Companions by R.A. Salvatore, the first book of The Sundering, a multiple author story set in the magical land of Faerûn.

In this first novel, and to much to my delight, we see some of my favorite fantastic characters, part of the Companions of the Hall, wake up in a magical forest, and become appointed by the goddess Mielikki to come back from their rest, and walk the treacherous paths leading to the white tundra knowed as the Icewind Dale.

This with the purpose of reuniting, after a century of absence, with the legendary drow ranger, Drizzt Do’Urden.

I won’t give more away, but all I can say is that the book made me cry at the end, and Catti-brie kick even more ass.

I recommend you grab all of the Legend of Drizzt saga, one of the best fantasy series ever written.

I am off to read, and try to balance my reading schedule, because I have fallen behind.

(Y-11) closing out the night

I am on the final stretch of today’s reading.

I will probably gave like 50 minutes left on my eyes, do I’ll make the best of them.

Tomorrow’s tasks are to finish The Last Threshold.

Currently on page 317 of 434, luckily I am entering the final part of the book.

The other thing to do is finish my prep work do I can finish my backyard, u need some outdoor work.

Well, now it’s back to reading.

(Y-11) Between pages and ancient curses.

I am enjoying this vacation period so much.

In between reading and napping, I have been able to squeeze in some other activities, for example, right now I am gearing up to finally finish work on my little desert oasis.

And, a couple of days ago, we went to see the temporary exhibition of the famous pharaoh Tutankhamon.

Comprised of over 200 pieces, some from the original time period, and some amazing dioramas depicting the mummification process make this exhibition a must for any lover of history.

I am planning to go again after the vacation period, so I can go thru it more slowly and read all the information.

Here are some pictures.

Now, concerning my reading, I am working on the fourth book of The Neverwinter Saga, The Last Threshold, from which I am currently on page 33 of 434, it has been a slow start but my pace is catching a good rhythm.

Also, I finished the second volume of the now classic series of Vertigo Comics by visionary writer Warren Ellis, I am of course talking about Transmetropolitan, which follows the misadventures of journalist Spider Jerusalem in all his dystopian gonzo glory.

20190419_0800011412316331485332949.jpg

For today; I’ll work on two graphic novels, the third volume of All-Star Batman and some throwback Hellblazer story, City of Demons, beautifully illustrated by one of my favorites illustrators, Sean Murphy in collaboration with fantastic writer Si Spurrier.

screenshot_20190417-2243151331056374.jpg

Now concerning my numbers, it has been kind of fluctuating between really good days, for example, 316 pages, to really mediocre days, I mean 44 fucking pages, come on.

But the important thing is that I haven’t got any 0 pages days in a long time, and my current total for this the eleventh year of reading is 22,807 pages, still 31 days behind schedule, but I’ll put the pedal to the metal and close down this gap.

In whole, I have read 255,834 pages and I still have 244,166 to reach the next major milestone in my crazy project, 500,000 total pages.

And according to my calculations, this will be reached on May 3 of 2029, this is also something I have to keep on chipping away and get it closer to my current date.

But the only way to do this is to read.

And on that note, I’ll see you soon, I have some reading to do.

azr.

(Y-11) 198 days and the 20,000 pages

It has been quite a while since I have written a proper post, so here we go because I have a lot to go thru in this entry.

Let me start with what I have been reading and what I finished reading.

First off, I finished the first volume of the fantastic run by Joshua Hickman dealing with the Mad Titan; I am referring to Infinity, where the Avengers, and heroes from all over the Marvel comic universe, come face to face with another conquering scheme by Thanos.

I love these colossal crossover events by Marvel, especially if the Kree Empire is involved, right now I am starting to read the second volume, and it started off with a bang.

The other thing I am currently working on is the sixth volume of James Tynion IV run on Detective Comics, The Fall of the Batmen, I fell in love immediately with this series, he is using characters like Anarky, Azrael and Spoiler, not the most well-known in the Batman Universe, but super cool.

Detective Vol 6

The other things I finished reading, and in the commemoration of the 25th publication anniversary of Hellboy, some volumes of the adventures of the B.P.R.D., minus Hellboy, in this particular stories, The Plague of Frogs volumes 3 and 4.

The agents confronted the flourishing threat of the now legendary War of the Frogs, and with Roger out of the picture and Captain Daimio in full were-jaguar mode, the possibilities of coming out of this conflict unharmed are growing thin.

I highly recommend diving right into the Hellboy Universe, it will not disappoint.

You can find a really complete timeline to navigate thru this ever-growing universe full of iconic characters and stories.

I forgot to mention that along with these two amazing volumes, I also read the Spanish version of the second volume of Hellboy, Wake the Devil, which consequently was the book that put me over the 20,000-page mark for this year, but more on that later.

20190323_135330-1533669573.jpg

On the really neglected book front, I am still working on Charon’s Claw, currently on page 193, but I have promised myself to at least read for 30 minutes each, this with the idea to finish the Neverwinter Saga before my spring break vacation, which starts on April 15.

Now let us talk about my numbers.

As I mentioned before, the 20,000-page mark has been reached for this eleventh year of reading.

My current total is 20,475 pages, and my real progress is closing in my projected total, I can see how the gap is closing, and my rhythm is slowly getting in tune with what my heart desires to read this year.

This process has been slow but I gain ground each and every day, but still, I am 27 days behind my reading schedule.

With this in mind, the upcoming vacations are going to be crucial for me to keep closing this gap, and eventually finish the year with 53,000 pages.

Now concerning my next milestone, reaching 500,000 pages, this is the current situation.

The global total for my project is at 253,502 pages, this after 3,825 days.

And with 4,453 days until my 50th birthday, I have a lot of work ahead of me.

With these numbers in place, and keeping in mind my currents speed and average of pages per day, the next significant milestone, according to my projections, will be achieved on June 1, 2029.

Which is not an acceptable date, because this would mean that I will only have 2 more years to finish half a million pages.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel because when I started projecting when I was going to reach this goal the original date was July 26, 2029.

That is almost two months gained.

So the plans for the weekend are quite simple, close off March on a high note and probably get pretty close to 22,000 pages and gaining some more ground on the end date of my next milestone.

The books on my cache are:

Infinity Book II

Charon’s Claw (Third book of the Neverwinter Saga)

Batman: Detective Comics Vol. 6

Now back to it, for the night is dark and full or reading.

azr.

P.S.

I really need to update my Goodreads page.
