A, more or less triumphant, return

It has been more than a month since my last post, and things have been progressing not quite the way that I would have liked. Don’t misinterpret me, there´s has been some amazing days for my page count, but in all, my goal at this point of the game is still far into the horizon.

Let’s begin with the thing that concerns me the most, the 46 days that my reading schedule has fallen behind. By now I should be nearing 29,000 total pages for year 15. Although 20,181 it’s not a bad total if this pace is maintained, by the end of the year I’ll be looking at 47,046 total pages, again, not a bad result, but around 17,000 pages less than my projections.

The other spectrum that gives me a headache is the finish dates for the first 500,000 and consequently the full scope one this project’s namesake, the elusive 1,000,000 pages. Right now, my date for reaching the first monumental milestone is November 29, 2024, a full 19 months later than my original plan of reaching it by March 2023.

The whole enchilada is even more behind, 114 months to be precise. I’m looking to cross the finish line by November 2041, a full 9 years 7 months, and 16 days after my 50th birthday. But if these challenges didn’t present themselves, well, the whole spice of the thing would go out the door.

My focus is now pinpointed on taking little steps toward the bigger picture, to start, and hopefully, I found the one app to help me along the way, is to reach each and every day my minimal average, which is 178 pages, so far, at least for the month of November, this has been the case of 4 of the 12 days. The positive side of things is that my total is 1,615 pages and 11 hours and 23 minutes logged.

The images you see above are from the reading tracking app “Read More“, which has a very simple but effective interface that allows you to keep track without having to put a lot of time into updates, time that could be spent reading.

To close out this week of reading, my focus is to reach the total projected for the week, just 630 pages left, and hopefully add on around 242 pages which represent my “little steps” toward the bigger goal.

It’s good to be back.

Off to read

P.S.

I didn’t not mention it ,but my grand total is currently at 436,557 pages, let´s go get those 63,443 pages

It all started on these day on a chilly night of the year 2008. The crazy notion of trying the herculean task of reading 1,000,000 pages by the time I turned 50.

I was 27 back then, now, at 41, my total pages, after 5,114 days of reading, is 432,997, this distributed between 4,135 different items ranging from books all the way to single-issue comic books.

In all, it has been an amazing experience. There’s a lot work left to do for the 3,163 days left until my 50th birthday, my main focus is to reach by March 20 of 2023 the first half of my goal, and then, the real challenge begins.

For now, I’m off to read.

500,000-page watch: July 24, 2022

The impending, self imposed deadline to reach the first half million pages, that, of you remember, is on March 20, 2023 , has only 239 days to peak it´s ugly head and with it the completion of the first leg of the journey, and while we are here, I’ll give you a quick run down of this year’s numbers so far.

Starting with how things are going in the fifteen year of reading. Well, fortunately, I’m right on track to reach the 64,942. My current total is 9,119, and my average is 190 pages per day, that’s 12 pages above daily average needed to achieve this year´s goal.

Things are progressing as they should, as you can see from the Goals App image, what started with 77,554 pages to the coveted 500,000-page mark, it now has a 4% progress, not the flashy number but a constant movement in the right direction. As the other four tasks in my tracker, things are right where they should be, in some cases, a little ahead of schedule . You can see a full run down of my challenges in the image below.

Using the Goals app to give quick track of my progress.

Now for the main concern is the 74,505 pages left, and according to my projections, I will be arriving to this milestone on December 22, 2024. This date puts me 635 days behind schedule, 33 days earlier that the last projection of this particular goal. The challenge now is to read an average of 311 pages, which I have done some in more that one occasion in the last 10 days, but it has to become the benchmark of each and everyday for the foreseeable future.

500,000-page watch: July 14, 2022

Keeping a close watch to the impending, self imposed deadline to reach the first half million pages, that, of you remember, is on March 20, 2023 . These leaves me with 249 days to complete the first leg of the journey, and while we are here, give you a quick run down of this year’s numbers so far.

Starting with how things are going in the fifteen year of reading. Well, fortunately, I’m right on track to reach the 64,942. My current total is 6,548, and my average is 177 pages per day, just a little under the daily average needed to achieve this year´s goal, but nothing major.

In order to keep a better tally off how things are progressing I added a new challenge in the Goals App, in addition to the the total pages for the year and month, and the total hours of the year a month, a new countdown to the coveted 500,000-page mark. It starts with a total 77,554 pages. You can see the run down of my challenges in the image below.

Now for the main concern, right now I still have 77,076 pages left, and according to my projections, I will be arriving to this milestone on January 15, 2025. This date puts me 668 days behind schedule. The challenge now is to read an average of 305 pages, not impossible, but mind you, quite the gargantuan task.

500,000-page watch: July 8, 2022

With 256 days left for my left imposed deadline, March 20, 2023, I tough that was a good time to see how things are shaping-up for the first 500,00 pages of this journey, and while we are here, give you a quick run down of this year’s numbers so far.

Starting with how things are going in the fifteen year of reading. Well, fortunately, I’m right on track to reach the 64,942. My current total is 5,626, and my average is 181 pages per day, just a little over the daily average needed to achieve this year´s goal.

In addition to the total pages, this year I added a new challenge, read at least 2 hours per day, so far, there are 48 hours tallied since the year started. You can see the run down of my challenges in the image below.

Now for the main concern, right now I still have 77,998 pages left, and according to my projections, I will be arriving to this milestone on January 21, 2025. 500,000-page watch: April 17,2022

I still have the crazy idea to reach my first half of the 1,000,000-page challenge by March 20, 2023. This means that I have 338 days to do so.

With the latest update my grand total stands at 404,306 pages, leaving me with 95,694 pages to reach this coveted part of my journey. With the recent success on my daily reading, there’s a real possibility to even get there sooner, leaving a little more time to go after the second half of my goal.

The daily average for getting there is 283, of which, I have surpassed in 8 of the last 9 days of reading. It’s quite the gargantuan task, and to be completely, my main concern is to amass the vast quantity of reading material to get it done.

On queue there’s 48,228 available, that’s doesn’t even scratch the surface of how many pages I have left to read, it represents around 10%, thankfully, there’s a lot of material available in my Kindle Unlimited membership.

Lots of things to cover to get pass the goal, but that’s part of what keeps it fun and fresh, testament to this is that I have been doing it for 1/3 of my life.
